Metal effect is one of the most well-known effect in text art. Many ways can be used to create it, one of them is that I will show in this typography tutorial. We will be using some Layer Style to the text to create realistic metal effect.
Final Image Preview
Take a look at the image we’ll be creating. You can view the final image preview below or a larger version here.
We start by creating a new Photoshop document sized 1200 x 700 px, and create a smooth gray gradient as the background.
By using the Type Tool (T), type the text that you want. In this tutorial I use the font Times New Roman, while for the font color, whatever it doesn’t matter.
Now we will start using the Layer Style. Double-clicks the text layer to bring up the layer style window. On the first page of the layer style window, change the Fill Opacity to 0%. This is why the color of the text that we use in Step 2 can be any color.
The next step is to add a Drop Shadow on text. Use the settings as shown below.
Now add Outer Glow Style to the text.
Layer style that we use next is Bevel and Emboss. Screenshot below will provide information on how the settings I use here.
Check the Contour box and set as shown below.
As a last step we will give Stroke on the text layer. Set Stroke like the picture below and press OK when finished.
