In today’s Photoshop tutorial, we will create an cool black briefcase icon from scratch using simple shapes and layer styles. Let’s get started!
Create a new document with size of 1280 x 1024 pixels at a resolution of 300ppi, select white as the background color. Actually a good background for an icon is Transparent, but in this tutorial i use the white color just to make it easier, whereas after the icon is complete, you can disable this white background and save it in PNG.
First we create the base, use the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U) with a radius of 45px, make a shape as shown in the following figure.
Now on the menu select Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color, when a dialog box click OK, the next will appear Color Picker window, select black # 000000 and click OK.
In the layers palette, click the double-layer Solid Color 1 to display the Layer Style window. As our basic colors create smooth gradient from dark gray to a little light. Check the Gradient Overlay layer style and set it as follows. Do not press OK because we’ll move on to step 4.
Now give Stroke on a Solid Color 1 layer, set it as the picture below. Press OK when done.
Up here we get a picture as follows.
Create another shape using Rounded Rectangle Tool (U) radius 45px. Make sure the top line, right and left cheek by jowl with the line on a shape. So shape 2 has a width equal to shape 1 with a height less than half. Use the Add Anchor Point Tool, add a new anchor point at the center of the bottom line second shape, then drag the anchor point slightly downward to obtain a curved line.
Back as we did in Step 2, choose Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color on the menu, when a dialog box click OK, the next will appear Color Picker window, select the color # 353535 and click OK.
