Because someone requests me to write the tutorial using a blending mode, this time will discuss the Color Dodge. Color Dodge is blending mode that is very important to create light effects in photoshop.
The idea behind this work is about the nuclear which is also known by the term ‘nuke’, is one of the most promising electric energy generator in the world today. Utilization of nuclear energy is increasingly growing in many countries. Because nuclear power plant is a powerhouse of the most reliable for the present and future. With increasingly advanced technology, security, safety has been proven, and cheap electricity prices, this will change the public perception of nuclear technology.
Final Image Preview
Before we get started, take a look at the image we’ll be created. You also can view the actual size.
Open Photoshop, create a new document the size of 1920 x 1200 pixels with a resolution of 300 ppi. As the background select a dark brown color # 15100c. Here I use a brown color due to Color Dodge can not work on the color black # 000000, so you can also wear other dark colors as long as not black.
Type ‘NUKE’, with each letter one layer and then stacking as follows. Font and font color can use anything, that has particularly important as the type of font that I use is the thickness and does not have curved sides.
Use the Pen Tool (P) to create a path around the edge of the letter and give a little extra on the right resembling the letter L.
Hide the text layer ‘NUKE’ by clicking the image on the left eye in the window layer. Create a new layer above all layers, we name it ‘Layer 2′. From the path that has been made in the previous step we created a stroke path with brush diameter and hardness 5 px 100%, before do it don’t forget to change the foreground color to white # FFFFFF.
Time to shine effect on our image. The trick, change the Blending Mode ‘layer 2′ to Color Dodge. Create a new group layer and enter ‘Layer 2′ into it. Blending Mode of the group is also changed to Color Dodge for the resulting effect would be different if it stays with Pass Through Blending Mode. Make ‘Layer 2′ blur with Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, enter a radius of 2 px.
Create a new layer above the ‘Layer 2′ and still within the group. Create a small ellipse using the Elliptical Marquee Tool and fill with white. Change its Blending Mode to Color Dodge and provide Gaussian Blur with a radius of 8 px.
Duplicate this layer and position it like in the following figures illustrate that it looked like an electric current in a wire.
To make it more cool, create a new layer above the light group. Make sure the white color # FFFFFF as your foreground and black # 000000 as background, and then Filter > Render > Clouds. Then change the blending mode of this layer to Color Dodge.
As a final touch, add a light bulb image on the wallpaper.
Conclusions from the steps above, a fairly easy way to create light effects in photoshop, its stages:
- use dark colors for the background but not black
- create a line, plane, text or other with white color
- change the Blending Mode to Color Dodge and apply Gaussian Blur
- enter layer into a group with Color Dodge Blending Mode
You can create light effects, glow, stars and others with the Color Dodge, but remember this will not work on a black background. So if you want to use black as a color backgroud then create another layer between the black and the Color Dodge layer with other colors other than black. Meanwhile, if you want to try other colors, just make the layer above it with the desired color and then change the Blending Mode to Overlay.
